Free Gimp tutorial PDFs
Issue 128 of Linux Format magazine carries the last instalment of our Gimp tutorial series. It's been going on-and-off for years now, with the latest batch running from June 2008 until now.
Although we're sad to see the Gimp tutorial go away for the time being, we'd like to thank its author - the incredibly prolific Michael J. Hammel - for all the awesome work he's done over the years, and we're happy to announce that we're releasing high-res PDFs of Michael's 18 most recent GIMP tutorials for everyone to enjoy.
LXF readers have, we hope, learned a lot following in Michael's footsteps over the years, and it's great to be able to share these tutorials with an even wider audience. In these tutorials, you'll learn how to create all sorts of fun, weird and wonderful effects with Gimp, and the step-by-step guide should make it easy for users of all levels to follow.
Read on for download instructions and more information about what's inside...
What's inside
We're giving you the high-res PDFs - the same ones we use to actually print the pages of the magazine - which means they'll look awesome on your screen, or printed out. The down-side of this is that the files are quite big - the total download is 90MB.
You're free to use these tutorials for personal use or for non-commercial offline redistribution - ie, you can give them away at your LUG, share them with colleagues at your office, or burn them to a CD as a backup. Please don't put them online; if someone else wants to download them, direct them to this URL.

single windowed mode
johnvile - January 16, 2010 @ 11:20am
anyone tried single windowed mode yet in Gimp2.7? I can't install it yet. will single window mode temp me away from Photoshop forever? Or is it just same old same old?
I'm quite eager to try it out.
Muchas Gracias

Book Not Available
Charlie Ullman (not verified) - January 18, 2010 @ 1:23pm
Looks like his book isn't available at either amazon.co.uk or amazon.com. I'd happily pay for a bound version of his collected tutorials, rather than go to the faff of downloading and printing them all.
single window mode
Boudewijn Rempt (not verified) - January 18, 2010 @ 5:14pm
Well, I am running Gimp from git updated daily, and single window mode is _very_ nice -- it almost makes Gimp look like Krita (disclaimer: I am the Krita maintainer). Sure, there are still little infelicities, but then, it's being worked on right now. Good stuff, well worth the cycles to compile it and keep track of.
¿Alguien puede poner una descarga directa?
Anonymous Penguin (not verified) - January 18, 2010 @ 9:37pm

Ubuntu One?
HandyGandy (not verified) - January 19, 2010 @ 3:26pm
Why not put it on one fo your Ubuntu One accounts
and make it public? ( If I understand Ubuntu One correctly. )
Seems a good thing to put "in the coud".

Important reminder
TuxRadar - January 19, 2010 @ 10:09pm
Everyone: we're giving away a lot of content here, and the only thing we're asking you to do is not redistribute the content online. Here's what it says above:
"You're free to use these tutorials for personal use or for non-commercial offline redistribution - ie, you can give them away at your LUG, share them with colleagues at your office, or burn them to a CD as a backup. Please don't put them online; if someone else wants to download them, direct them to this URL."
We think that's pretty clear. That includes RapidShare. That includes Ubuntu One. That includes your personal web server. Please don't redistribute the files online; point people here. Yes, some people have trouble with BitTorrent, and so in 48 hours we'll be providing a direct download link for the files so that everyone can get it.
We know this is onerous, because after all the web is made for sharing, but we need to be able to track how many people are downloading the tutorials, otherwise we'll never get permission to release more. If you redistribute the files online, you're just shooting yourself in the foot.
Thanks, these are some great
Anonymous Penguin (not verified) - January 20, 2010 @ 4:16am
Thanks, these are some great tutorials. Another site that has amazing video tutorials is http://yourvideoproducts.com/masterthegimp/?e=tutorial
Combine with the pdfs, and you'll be a master at Gimp in no time:)
Apologies
HandyGandy (not verified) - January 20, 2010 @ 6:42am
When you said BitTorrent only, I figured that there was some difficulty involved in other methods of downloading vis a vis bandwidth.
When I suggested Ubuntu One I was suggesting it as a possible solution to the bandwidth problem for TuxRadar approved personnel aka the *editors* put it on one of their Ubuntu One accounts.
After all my years on the net, I should have anticipated that some young overexcited moro^H^H^H^H person would put it up somewhere for download.
Sorry
downloading it
esse (not verified) - January 20, 2010 @ 12:07pm
Why don't you post it on megaupload or rapidshare or any other server to download it directly? It will be a good alternative to don't saturate you server and allow us to download it without BitTorrent.
Thanks
