Win a subscription to Linux Format magazine
Posted at 11:27am on Tuesday July 14th 2009
In Episode 12 of our podcast, Mike sang the Free Software song. If you want the chance to win a free subscription to Linux Format magazine - that's 13 issues delivered to your door wherever you are in the world, plus access to all our back issues as PDFs - read on...
Here's the challenge: all you have to do is record yourself/your friends/your family/your cat/whatever singing the Free Software song. The rules are simple:
- You need to sing at least the first verse (but, let's face it, you have more chance of winning if you sing more)
- You can use video + YouTube if you like. Extra points if your video is funny.
- You need to mention TuxRadar either at the start or end of your recording, otherwise people might submit recording someone else has done.
- You don't have to do a Richard Stallman impression.
- We don't care where you live; we'll send your free magazines anywhere in the world.
We'll pick the best recording, and our decision is final. If you have any questions or if you want to submit your entry, post a comment below or ping us on Twitter.

I recall a similar musical effort by one of the journos on Your Sinclair (if memory serves) entitled Hold My Hand Very Tightly... Of course, this was back in the day!
It sent me round the bend; I have a sneaking suspicion that the Free Software Song will do the same...
Strangely enough my captcha is inbreeds work - hopefuly not a sign of Mike's talents?

If we had the ability to hand out free LXF subscriptions on the fly, you'd get one just for mentioning Hold My Hand Very Tightly. Is that available as an MP3 somewhere? We hope so - it was indeed a true classic.
My cat won't sing

Fixed that for you. ;)
Free Software

Three comments on one post? We need an edit function! Or I need to think before I hit Post.
Anyway, seeing as the song is all Free Software and such, the entries supplied *must* be in a Free format?
Or is that too Stallman-esque?

Chaps,
Nice marketing idea for the mag - I'm sure it will be very popular. Not sure whether you've heard, but back on planet Earth there was an ever so small announcement recently that some minor internet company is planning a Linux-based OS to potentially compete with Microsoft.
No mention on Tuxradar - was the story not big enough?

Here you are, a link to the song at World of Spectrum and lots of other Whistlin' Rick loveliness, including a moody publicity shot for the ladies:

Thanks for providing the link - we played it back to Andy Ounsted of Andy's Crap Bike fame, and it was Very Nostalgic Indeed. Nice one!

No one said the singing had to be *good* :)
A remix?
Paulo (not verified) - July 21, 2009 @ 12:05pm
Hi Mike,
Since my singing skills are nil, I decided to rather make a remix of your now world famous rendition of the freeware song.
Does a remix count? and if so where do I email it to?
A remix and video
