Can you hear that noise? It's the sound of a brand new distro coming over the hills. Mandriva 2009.1 (aka 'Spring') is almost here, and the second release candidate is available for testers to iron out any last-minute crinkles. It's available in full-whack DVD incarnations or diet-friendly Live CD versions. Summary of changes since 2009.0 after the break.
- KDE 4.2
- Gnome 2.26
- Xfce 4.6
- X.org 1.6.0
- Kernel 2.6.29
- Speedboot gets the display manager running earlier
- DrakX installer uses urpmi
- ext4 available (not default filesystem choice though)
Speedboot looks intriguing. Getting the display manager (ie GDM or KDM login screen) up earlier in the boot process could make the system appear to boot faster, but then what? You'll still have all the other boot scripts grinding away in the background, and you end up with a Windows-like situation in which the desktop arrives quite quickly, but you can't use the machine for a while until the rampant disk activity calms down. If the Speedboot folks can tweak and chop some of the other boot scripts, that'd help considerably.
